The THREE controversial things I do for my wellness.
(or don't do depending on which way you look at it)
(or don't do depending on which way you look at it)
I don’t work out every day.
I don’t change my workout routine or food with my cycle.
There are a number of reasons why I don’t do these things despite them being all really quite trendy right now.
I personally don’t think wearables are necessary unless you’re a professional athlete. There. I’ve said it….
The majority of us can tell when we’ve had a good or bad night's sleep. The majority of us don’t need to track our heart rate. The majority of us know when we’ve got enough movement into our day and really don’t need a watch/ring to tell us otherwise.
They also come with negatives (aside from the monthly costs)…. I’ve seen so many people develop increased health anxiety from these devices both as a doctor and personal experiences.
The only device I use from time to time is a Garmin to track my running route/distance/pace… I don’t even use it for zone two (the minute I can’t talk and run I know I’m out of my heart rate zone).
I don’t train everyday because I don’t have time.
I think it’s important to get some movement into our day (I always try to take a short walk at lunch time - my lunch time lap - but I don’t necessarily pick up weights or get a sweat on). I aim to “train” by doing a strength session at least 3 times per week. I’ve found personally this maintains my strength, physique & allows me time to fit in other forms of movement that I enjoy into my week (like a random Pilates class or run).
I personally don’t think we need to change our exercise/food based on our cycle specifically… we should be changing it based on how we feel. There are some days (regardless of where I am in my cycle) that I walk into the gym and feel wiped - I might not have eaten well, slept well or my mindset might just be off - then there will be other days where I feel like death but hit PBs. It’s so unpredictable and I think we all need to get better at self-regulating our food/movement with ourselves day-to-day instead creating specific patterns around our cycle.
Ultimately, wellness is about listening to your own body and finding what works for you. It isn’t about following every trend or piece of advice you see online. It’s about being realistic and sustainable in your approach. It’s about finding balance and enjoying the process, rather than obsessing over every detail.
I’m planning to share more realistic and down-to-earth wellness advice, make sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter if you would like to receive them to your inbox directly or you can follow me on Instagram @ellejeantodd for daily inspiration and updates.
