Two things I do to overcome the Sunday Scares.

I worked a Sunday shift in A&E last weekend and it reminded me of something I used to do too often when I was working full-time….

I used to try to avoid the Sunday scares by working the sunday and then having the monday off work.

This sounds completely ridiculous now as I type it out but it used to work.

I didn’t get that sinking feeling in my gut on a sunday night because I had already been at work and I had the next day off.

I can see the irony of this now… it really hadn’t occurred to me at the time that I was just continuing to work to avoid the dread of “going back” to work. 😂

It was an easy way to avoid them.

There’s a big difference though between the easiest way to do something and the best way to do something, especially when that “thing” is trying to avoid the Sunday Scaries.

I used to get them quite a bit when I was working as a full-time NHS doctor.

I think there were a few reasons underlying why I got them but it largely came down to the fact that I wasn’t finding the work I was doing as a Doctor very fulfilling & I really wanted to be spending my time doing other things… like working on my own businesses.

I now do lots of different things for work including working on my own business but there are still a couple of things that I do to make sure I go into the week ahead with the right mindset.

1. I try to focus on the things that I know I WILL enjoy about my week & change my mindset from I “have” to do these things to I “get” to do these things.

2. I make sure to outline a few things I want to achieve for myself & where necessary make plans so that those things definitely happen!

The best way to avoid the Sunday Scaries is going to be unique for each of us but it really does come down to a fundamental point; we need to look forward to what we are doing that coming week rather than “fear” it.

It might be that we don’t enjoy EVERYTHING about the work we are doing (any job will likely have good & bad parts) but on the whole we need to be looking forward to what’s to come rather than silently dreading it.
